The official art museum of the state of Georgia and also an academic museum, the GMOA’s 13 galleries include stellar collections in 19th and 20th century American painting, Italian Renaissance painting, Asian art and southern decorative arts. Check the events calendar before you visit as there is always something fun going on: Lectures and gallery talks, Morning Mindfulness (meditation), Family Days, films and more. The GMOA is part of the city’s Third Thursday evening art experience. Don’t forget to browse the museum shop and end with tea and a bite at the café.

A guided tour is a fabulous way to get to know this classic Southern city, and the Athens Welcome Center gives you lots of choices. Try the Athens Heritage bus tour, or the “Museum Mile” where you will see inside four of Athens’ antebellum house museums. You might catch a fun seasonal tour, or you can try one of six self-guided walking or Athens, and you need to be part of it. Pick driving tours (details on the website). Walk- ins may be accommodated, but advance reservations are recommended.

Located in the Five Points neighborhood within walking distance from campus, the Independent Baking Co. distributes its delicious breads and pastries through fine shops and restaurants all around Athens, but the most fun is to savor something fresh-baked (along with an espresso) right on the charming premises. You’ll find a classic four-ingredient French baguette along with an assortment of mouth-watering daily loaves featuring locally grown wheat, ancient grains, Georgia pecans and other pure and delicious ingredients. The croissants and Danish are to die for. Expect to go home with your belly full and your arms laden.

It’s where it all started for the B-52s, R.E.M., Widespread Panic and many other bands. Music of all genres is playing all the time in Athens, and you need to be a part of it. Every season of the year, there is something to delight senses and spirit at the State Botanical Garden. Explore the Heritage, International and Native Flora Gardens; meander the Hummingbird Trail; bask in the fragrant Tropical Conservatory; or just take a stroll (there are five miles of nature trails) or relax on a shady bench. Check the website for special programs including guided “Garden Rambles.” The grounds are open daily (the visitor center, café and gift shop are closed on Mondays).
